N&W 2156 was a steam locomotive that was built in 1936 for the Norfolk and Western Railway. It was a class J 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive and was one of the largest and most powerful steam engines ever built. The locomotive was used primarily for freight service, hauling heavy coal trains over the rugged terrain of the Appalachians. It was retired from service in 1959 and was eventually preserved and restored for display. Today, N&W 2156 is part of the collection of the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia, where it can be viewed by the public.
